Post-Truth by Lee McIntyre How we arrived in a post-truth era, when "alternative facts" replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence. Are we living in a post-truth world, where "alternative facts" replace actual facts and feelings have more weight than evidence? How did we get here? In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Lee McIntyre traces the development of the post-truth phenomenon from science denial through the rise of "fake news," from our psychological blind spots to the public's retreat into "information silos." What, exactly, is post-truth? Is it wishful thinking, political spin, mass delusion, bold-faced lying? McIntyre analyzes recent examples — claims about inauguration crowd size, crime statistics, and the popular vote — and finds that post-truth is an assertion of ideological supremacy by which its practitioners try to compel someone to believe something regardless of the evidence. Yet post-truth didn't begin with the 2016 election; the denial of scientific facts about smoking, evolution, vaccines, and climate change offers a road map for more widespread fact denial. Add to this the wired-in cognitive biases that make us feel that our conclusions are based on good reasoning even when they are not, the decline of traditional media and the rise of social media, and the emergence of fake news as a political tool, and we have the ideal conditions for post-truth. McIntyre also argues provocatively that the right wing borrowed from postmodernism — specifically, the idea that there is no such thing as objective truth — in its attacks on science and facts. McIntyre argues that we can fight post-truth, and that the first step in fighting post-truth is to understand it.

Many are fearful as we rush headlong into a post-truth world. Post-truth may have begun as an attack on the lies and deceit of politicians, but it has now become the description of our age. The digital revolution was supposed to herald a new era of openness. Remember the Arab spring? Instead it has uncovered a myriad of
Oriol Junqueras' post-truth politics | Letras Libres
In a recent article published in The New York Times, “Catalonia Will Not Retreat”, Mr. Junqueras conveniently failed to mention that at least half the Catalans are against his pet project. 70 out of 135 MPs of the Catalan Parliament -representing around 50% of the popular vote- were in favor of the
The academic roots of post-truth society – Battle of Ideas 2018
It has almost become a cliché to note that we seem to be living in a new age ofpost-truth, or post-factual politics. Liberal critics and academics in particular blame right-wing politicians for disparaging the importance of evidence and expertise, and for stirring up emotions rather than appealing to rationality. Michael Gove's

Anthem Press - Post-Truth
'Post-Truth' was Oxford Dictionary's 2016 word of the year. While the term was coined by its disparagers, especially in light of the Brexit and US Presidential campaigns, the roots of post-truth lie deep in the history of Western social and political theory. This book reaches back to Plato, ranges across theology and philosophy,
'Post-truth' named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries | Books
Oxford Dictionaries's word of the year is intended to “reflect the passing year in language”, with post-truth following the controversial choice last year of the “face with tears of joy” emoji. The publisher's US and UK dictionary teams sometimes plump for different choices – in 2009 the UK went for “simples” and
